Bruins Win Third Straight Region Championship

For the third straight year, the Bruins are the NCCAA DII South Region champions after beating the Trinity College of Jacksonville Eagles 99-89. This is the sixth region championship in program history, and the first with Tony Miller as head coach.

"We talked about being aggressive and attacking the whole time," Head Coach Tony Miller said. "Everyone took that plan to heart and played well today."

As the game began, the Bruins started a little flat on the offensive side, but it didn't take long for them to find a rhythm. They were down by as much as eight points early on, but brought it back and traded baskets with the Eagles for the majority of the half. Trevor Pittman had an incredible half which gave the Bruins a boost to take the lead and keep it. He scored 16 points to lead the team, followed by Shad Vander Hart with 14. The Bruins ended the half on an 11-4 run to take a 50-42 lead going into halftime.

The Bruins kept control in the second half and never wavered despite several pushes from the Eagles. Every basket by the Eagles was answered with a strong drive to the rim or an open shot off good ball movement. The Bruins lead never got under eight points the whole half. Even though the Bruins had 16 fouls in the half, they didn't let it get to them. Justin Skelton turned it on and led the team with 12 points in the half. The confidence and control by the Bruins proved to be too much for the Eagles to handle. The Bruins won 99-89 to win their third straight South Region championship.

Shad Vander Hart and Trevor Pittman both ended the night with 23 points each, followed by Justin Skelton with 21 points. Brandon Wilkins scored 14 and Braxton Murray added nine.

The first year with Dr. Tony Miller as head coach resulted in a region banner, but now the Bruins eyes are on the prize at the national tournament. They await their seeding as they look forward to playing in the NCCAA DII National Tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 11-14.
