The Bob Jones University baseball team jumped out to an early lead Friday night at Conestee Park, but a late rally lifted region opponent Southeastern Baptist College to a 4-2 win Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina. With today's result, the Bruins now sit at 5-11 on the season.
As the game got underway, Bob Jones struck first in the opening inning. Mannix Crawford reached on an error, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout before Henry Rumble sent him home with an RBI double to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins extended the lead in the third inning. Jacob Highsmith singled and later scored when Evan Johnson reached on an error, pushing the advantage to 2-0.
Southeastern Baptist answered in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. After a strong start, Bruins pitcher Tillman Padgett settled back in after the inning, keeping the Chargers off the board through the eighth while scattering five hits and striking out five across eight innings.
Bob Jones had several chances to add insurance runs but stranded 11 runners on the night despite collecting 11 hits.
The Chargers broke through in the ninth. After a single and a walk put runners on, the Chargers reached on an error that allowed three runs to score, giving Southeastern Baptist its first lead of the night at 4-2.
The Bruins were unable to get runners home in the final inning and fell 4-2 to the Chargers.
The Bruins finished with 11 hits in the game, highlighted by Rumble's four-hit performance, but were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities in the loss.
"It was a tough loss tonight," said Head Coach Kyle Morrison. "The team hit the ball hard all night, and we hit the ball hard with guys in scoring position, but we just didn't find the open space."
The team is back in action on Saturday at Conestee Park with a doubleheader beginning at noon against Southeastern Baptist College.
