Box Score 2 The Bruins were able to snap their losing-streak this afternoon as they picked up a win to split the doubleheader against the Alice Lloyd College Eagles. They fell 6-2 in game one, but the bats woke up in game two leading to a big 10-4 win.
"We came out flat in game one, but we were able to turn it around with great energy in game two," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "Ryan Pierce did a phenomenal job to start the second game, and the bats came alive. Everyone did well in their approach from the plate and that led to runs on the board."
The Bruins were quiet offensively in game one and struggled to get a hit early in the game. The Eagles were able to capitalize on those struggles and put runs on the board to put them out in front where they would stay for the entirety of the game. Jason Quillin started on the mound for the Bruins and gave up four runs in the first inning. He was able to settle in, though, and pitched a great second and third inning. After two more runs were put on the board for the Eagles, Gabe Swarms came into the game in relief, and he threw three scoreless innings. The Bruins found themselves down 6-0 going into the fifth inning, and they were almost able to ignite a comeback.
Preston Cox and Elijah Medrano both hit singles followed by a Mannix Crawford walk. Evan Johnson came to the plate and hit an RBI-single to finally give the Bruins their first run of the game. Henry Rumble followed that with an RBI-single for himself making the game 6-2, but that was all the Bruins could do. The final score was 6-2.
Preston Cox and Evan Johnson both led the team with two hits each in the game.
Game two started the same way as game one with the Eagles scoring runs early. This time, however, the Bruins responded much differently from the plate. Ryan Pierce was the starter for the Bruins and pitched a quality four and two/thirds innings. After giving up the three early runs in the first inning, he stayed calm and shut the Eagles down. While he was doing his job, the Bruins bats were backing him up. Zac Tyre began the scoring with a bang when he hit a two-run home run to bring the Bruins back within a run in the second inning. Then in the third inning, Evan Johnson was walked followed by a double off the wall by Henry Rumble. Johnson later scored on a passed ball to tie the game 3-3.
The main explosion of runs for the Bruins came in the fourth inning, and they all came with two outs. Zac Tyre began the inning with a walk followed by a single from Kyle Prouse. Elijah Medrano gave a sac-bunt to advance the runners. Then Mannix Crawford was walked to load the bases. With two outs, Henry Rumble steps to the plate, and his intimidation roared. Tyre was able to score on a passed ball giving the Bruins the lead before Rumble hit a two RBI-single to extend the lead further. Now up 6-3, the Bruins weren't done. Cayden Kennedy was able to get an RBI-single to join the party in the fourth inning and give the Bruins a 7-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rumble added to his big day with an incredible diving catch in right field. Noah Ezell came in to pitch in the fifth inning, and got the Bruins out of a bases-loaded jam. Ezell was great with a scoreless inning and a third.
Three more runs came across for the Bruins in the sixth inning; all three from extra base hits. Rumble kept his fire going with an RBI-triple. Jacob Highsmith followed that with an RBI-double, and then Preston Cox mirrored that with an RBI-double himself.Â
Tillman Padgett came in to close the game, gave up a run, but kept it there. The Bruins came away with a great 10-4 win.
Henry Rumble led the Bruins in a big way going 4-4 with two singles, a double, and a triple tallying three RBIs. Zac Tyre got two RBIs from his early home run.
The Bruins now have a big series ahead of them as they will host Toccoa Falls College this weekend. Game one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday.Â
