It was another high-scoring contest between the Bruins and their NCCAA South Region rivals, Toccoa Falls College, as the Bruins came out on top with a 14-13 win to open the weekend series.
As today's game got underway from Toccoa Falls, Georgia, the Bruins got the scoring started early in the first inning as Zac Tyre singled to left field, giving Henry Rumble the chance to race home from second base. The Screaming Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to take the 3-1 lead.Â
In the second inning, the Bruins offense exploded. With two outs on the board, a triple by Preston Cox scored Cody Kirkpatrick. An RBI single by Evan Johnson evened the score 3-3. As Jacob Highsmith stepped up to bat, he sailed the ball over the fence to plate three runs and see BJU take the 6-3 lead.Â
The Screaming Eagles cut the deficit to just one run in the bottom of the second with another home run.
Back-to-back runs in the top of the fourth inning by Rumble and Highsmith pulled the Bruins back ahead 8-5. Evan Johnson singled to centerfield before advancing to second on an error, allowing both Mannix Crawford and Cox to add two more runs to the scoreboard in the seventh. An RBI double by Tyre pushed the Bruins to a five-point advantage in the seventh.Â
In the eighth inning, the Bruins tacked on three more runs to lead the Screaming Eagles 14-7. As the bottom of the inning came around, Toccoa Falls chipped away at the Bruins lead and soon pulled within two runs. They added one more run in the final inning, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins finished out the game on top 14-13.Â
Following the game, Head Coach Kyle Morrison said, "by God's grace, the team hit incredibly well today. They did a great job of attacking good pitches to hit. Gabriel Swarms did a great job of ending the game for us. Lord willing, we'll have the same approach tomorrow with the bat and will make our adjustments on the mound."
The Bruins are back in Georgia on Saturday for a doubleheader at Toccoa Falls College beginning at noon.Â
