The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team wrapped up their weekend at the Cougar Classic with back-to-back losses against Guilford College and Roanoke College. The Bruins fell in both games 3-0. With today's results, the Bruins now sit at 1-5 on the season.
The Bruins were back on the court for day two of the Cougar Classic in Danville, Virginia after pickup up their first win of the season 3-2 against Averett Univerisity Friday evening.
Game one of the day got underway at 11 a.m. against Guilford College. In set one, the Quakers pulled ahead to an early 11-6 lead over the Bruins. Kills by Blakely Brown and Alyssa Goebert helped pull the Bruins within two. The Quakers went on a 7-2 run to sit ahead 19-12. While the Bruins battled to close the deficit, they were unable to hold off Guilford and fell 25-19 in the opening set.
After knotting the score 5-5 thanks to timely kills by Stefanie Burke early in set two, the Bruins moved to a slight 7-5 advantage. The lead didn't hold as the Quakers responded to move ahead to a 19-12 lead before closing out the second set 25-18.
It was another strong start in the third set for Guilford as they got out ahead 11-3. The Bruins were unable to overcome that deficit and ended up finishing the third 25-12 to win the match 3-0.
After a brief break, the Bruins were back on the court for their second game of the day against Roanoke College. The Maroons had several strong kills and took advantage of several mistakes by the Bruins to lead 12-5 in the first. The Bruins soon trailed by eight, but the team rallied and went on a seven point run to cut the deficit by just one point. In the end, the Maroons pulled out the first set win 25-21.
Roanoke had a strong second set, and the Bruins were unable to hold them back as they took the match lead 2-0 after a 25-12 win.
In the third frame, the Bruins once again trailed early before scoring six straight to take a slight 8-7 advantage. The lead didn't last long as the Maroons continued a strong offense to pull out the set win and take the game in straight sets.
Following today's games, Head Coach Anthony Bennett said, "we battled against two great teams today and just couldn't pull it out. We have a lot to work on after today's matches, especially starting each set better. Our adjustments were just too little too late, and we didn't perform at our best to finish the weekend as a group. We're ready to get back in the gym and work hard in preparation for our first home match of the season on Tuesday!"
Up next, the Bruins are at home in the Davis Field House for their home opener on September 8 against Truett McConnell University.
