The Bruins have had a tough stretch as of late. The team entered their match against the Toccoa Falls College Eagles on Tuesday night facing their third match in the last five days. The Bruins have faced adversity at many points throughout the season, and the team would have to do so again as they looked for a much-needed win after riding a three-game losing streak. The crowd was out in full voice as around 700 fans were in attendance. The Eagles came into the match at 4-6-0 while the Bruins were 2-4-0.
From the outset the Bruins went right at the Eagles and began their attack. The Bruins showed great poise and control as they executed crisp passes and made several great runs. Their high-energy play would be rewarded as in the 2
nd minute of the game
Ryan McCarty would knock home a loose ball to put the Bruins on the board. The Bruins continued their offensive attack as the team fired shot after shot on net with several attempts sailing just wide of the goal. The team would end the half with 16 shots and a 1-0 lead.
“We came out strong right from the start,” Coach Jesse McCormick said. “We did a great job of moving the ball on the offensive side of the game and our communication was excellent.”
Even though they were in the driver’s seat, the Bruins wouldn’t let up the offensive pressure as the second half began. The team continued to pressure Eagles goalie Elijah Smith as the team notched 14 more shots in the second half. The Bruins were knocking on the door several times and saw several attempts hit the cross bar. As the game continued, the Bruins were desperate for an insurance goal that would solidify their lead. It would eventually come off of a powerful header by
Cody Lehman as he netted a beauty giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead late in the second half.
With victory in sight,
Tommy Sims put the nail in the coffin as his shot was deflected into the back of the net, sealing the 3-0 victory for the Bruins. The team recorded their first shutout of the season in the victory. Jon Sandy and Cam Lawson combined for six saves on the night.
“We are definitely taking steps in the right direction,” Coach McCormick said. “We still have some areas to improve but our guys played a great overall game tonight. This was a big win for us.”
With the win the Bruins improved to 3-4-0 on the year and snapped their previous three-game losing streak. The team will have a few days to rest before welcoming Columbia International University on Friday night.
