Bruins Losing Streak Reaches Three

Greensboro College uses late run to sink BJU 74-64

Box Score
The Bruins basketball team traveled to Rocky Mount, North Carolina to compete in the Roger Taylor Invitational Tournament hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan University. The Bruins were riding a two game losing streak after tough road losses to Thomas University and Emmanuel College. The Bruins would be facing the Greensboro College Pride, who were playing in their first game of the 2013-14 season.

From the opening tip, the Bruins struck first off a layup by Kyle Turner to get things underway. From there, the Pride and Bruins went back and forth with the Pride narrowly hanging on to a single possession lead. The Bruins rode on the shoulders of Kyle Turner, who had 8 first half points and 4 rebounds. The Pride countered with an impressive 16 points from Damian Dixon to keep a narrow lead. As the first half was drawing to a close, both teams changed leads several times until the Pride gathered a two point lead just before half. With seconds remaining, Will Griffin made a three point shot to give the Pride a 32-27 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Bruins cut the lead back to two on a Darnel Antoine basket. The Pride then capitalized on several Bruins turnovers and missed shots to go on a 10-0 run and take a big lead into the midpoint of the second half. The Bruins got back into the game by driving the lane and getting to the line, and by the skilled shooting of Zach Mercado who knocked down 8 second half points to work the score back to 50-50 with just minutes remaining. With both teams battling for the upper hand, the Bruins and Pride exchanged leads several times throughout the end of the second half.

Thomas Jacobs knocked down back to back three's for the Pride to give them a 66-58 lead. The Bruins had no choice but to try to make the Pride win the game from the line down the stretch. Greensboro knocked down clutch free throws by going 8 of 12 from the line in the final minutes. The Bruins tried to get back into the game, but the final buzzer handed the Bruins their third straight loss of the season with a 74-64 loss to Greensboro.

"We were where we wanted to be late in the game and just couldn't finish," Coach Ring said. "I am proud of our guys though. It was a hard fought game and we battled back. Overall we are disappointed with the loss but this was a good team we played. I know the guys will continue to work to improve and be better."

Larry Taylor had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Kyle Turner added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Zach Mercado scored 12 points while shooting 50% from the floor. The Bruins committed only 13 turnovers while forcing 11. With the loss, the team falls to 2-3 on the season. They will compete in day two of the Roger Taylor Invitational on Saturday afternoon when they take on the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops.
