The Bruins were on the road on Tuesday night as they traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina for a matchup with the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats. The team suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of Clearwater Christian and Pensacola Christian, and were looking to get back on track. The Wildcats entered Tuesday's game with an 8-14 record but were 5-1 in their conference and had won 3 of their last 5. The Bruins were up against their 4th road test in the last 5 games.
From the opening tip, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Coach Ring called a timeout to make some adjustments. The Bruins rode the slick shooting of Zach Mercado to claw their way back into the game as the team started four guards in the lineup. A three-pointer by Zach Mercado gave the Bruins their first lead at 26-23 with just over 9 minutes left in the first half. The Wildcats were able to battle back and take 39-35 lead into the break.
"It really came down to us making poor shot choices in the late stages of the half and their team making good shot choices," Coach Ring said. "This is a very good team and we knew we had to play better defense against their shooters."
In the second half, the Bruins were determined to force tough shots for the Wildcats. The Bruins countered on the offensive end by driving to the basket and getting to the line. The team shot 88% from the charity stripe as the team was neck and neck with the Wildcats. In the late stages of the half, Evan Brondyke knocked down three and Larry Taylor sunk back to back free throws to give the Bruins a 79-68 lead with just over a minute to play. The Wildcats made a last chance run to try to close the gap, but the Bruins held on for the 80-74 victory on the road.
"This was a tough road win for us tonight," Coach Ring said. "Three point defense has been our nemesis in recent games and we did a much better job of that tonight. It was the little things that have been hurting us recently and I we can work on those little things to get better. I was proud of the way we were able to show our improvement tonight."
Larry Taylor and Darnel Antoine each had 21 points and Zach Mercado chipped in 18. The team shot just under 50% for the game as the Bruins improve to 9-11 on the season. Coming up, the Bruins will have another tough road test as they look for a little revenge against Pensacola on Saturday night.
