Lions Maul Bruins 95-66

Team starts strong, but Emmanuel College uses second half surge to win big at home

Box Score
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Bruins couldn't keep the Lions at bay as Emmanuel College stormed back to defeat BJU 95-66 on Tuesday night in Franklin Springs, Georgia. "We really played an inspired first couple of minutes in this game," Coach Neal Ring said. "After that, we struggled to keep our focus and we allowed them to come back."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 14-15 on the season including being 1-4 in conference play. The Bruins came into Tuesday's game having dropped 4 of their last 5 games. The Bruins and Lions squared off in Greenville earlier this season with Emmanuel College stealing a win in front of the Bruin faithful in an 89-67 win. It was senior night for the Lions as the team honored the players playing in their final home game of their careers. The Bruins were hoping to play the role of spoiler as they took the court.

The Bruins began the game red hot from behind the arc as Kyle Turner knocked down back to back three point shots to fuel an 11-4 lead. The Bruins continued to ride the hot shooting from the outside as the tandem of Marshall Riddle and Dustin Killough provided the one-two punch for the Bruins offensively to help them keep the lead. Slowly, the Lions began to chip away at the lead but the Bruins were able to stay on top.

At the midway point of the half, Lions forward Emmerson McClung slammed home a dunk to give the Lions their first lead of the game 25-23. With the crowd energized, the Lions continued to ride the momentum and outscored the Bruins 24-8 to take a 49-34 into the half.

As the second half began, the Bruins were still within striking distance and looked to climb back into the game as Dustin Killough knocked down a jump shot and Justin Matthews scored, but the Lions matched the Bruins basket for basket to continue to keep a double digit advantage. At the midway point of the half, the Lions used an 18-5 run to jump out to a comfortable lead. The Lions continued to keep the pressure on as the offense was firing on all cylinders to continue to build a lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the Lions cruised to a 95-66 win over the Bruins.

"Their defense made it difficult for us to score in the second half," Coach Ring said. "We also couldn't seem to score on our end which hurt us. We played a tough team tonight, and we'll come back and get ready for Saturday."

Marshall Riddle had 16 points to lead the Bruins scoring and Kyle Turner finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds and Dustin Killough finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds. The Lions dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bruins 43-26 in the game. Despite the hot start, the Bruins finished shooting just 26% from three point range for the game. With the loss, the Bruins fall under .500 for the first time since the beginning of the season. Next up, the Bruins play their final game of the regular season on Saturday night as they welcome the College of Faith.
