Box Score
Abby Davis came through right when the Bruins needed it most as she scored the lone goal of the match giving the team a 1-0 victory over region-rival Toccoa Falls College on Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
"We had a lot of motivation heading into the match since this is a rematch of the regional championship game from last season," said sophomore Abby Davis. "Coach always tells us to push hard and keep going and we knew we needed to do that in this game."
In the opening minutes, the Bruins dominated possession but were called offsides on several offensive runs. Still, the team continued to pressure the Eagles net and looked to have an opportunity to take the lead after Mimi Lozano was fouled just inside the box. But the Bruins chances at the lead were turned aside as Eagles' keeper Jordyn Preston made a huge save on the PK to keep the match at 0-0. Despite numerous offensive opportunities for the Bruins, the half ended as it began tied at 0-0.
"Heading into the match we knew it would probably be decided by just one goal, so we knew we had to score first," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We rushed things too much in the 1st half. We weren't able to score on any of our opportunities because we lacked composure with the ball."
In the second half, the Bruins came out strong again with good possession and ball movement in the opening minutes. Still, the team couldn't seem to find a goal despite chances. Abby Davis received a through ball from Mimi Lozano but her shot was saved by Preston as again the score remained 0-0. With time winding down, the Bruins continued to pound the Eagles net. They finally broke through as Abby Davis was able to place the ball over opposing goalkeeper Jordyn Preston's hands after a beautiful through ball from freshman Kristyn Rygh. While it was the only goal of the match, it was all the Lady Bruins needed to get the win.
"It wasn't perfect and it wasn't always pretty but we got the one goal we needed," Coach Carmichael said. "This win puts us in good position for the region. We are going to have to play Toccoa again and I think it will be an equally tough game."
The Bruins outshot the Eagles 17-7 throughout the match. Abby Davis scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season while Kristyn Rygh recorded her 3rd assist on the year. With the win, the Bruins improve to 6-3 on the season. Next up, the Bruins have a road match with Point University in West Point, Georgia on Tuesday night.
