In June, Bruins women's soccer player Jane Farr had the opportunity to serve with
Medical Missions Outreach (MMO) on a team of Bob Jones University nursing and pre-med students in Roatán, Honduras.
Roatán is a popular tourist destination for some, but the vast majority of the population lives under the poverty line and is deprived of healthcare. Farr and the MMO team partnered with Iglesia Bautista Fe Viviente (Living Faith Baptist Church) to run a free medical and optical clinic, offering medical care and the good news of the Gospel.
Farr, a senior pre-med student, rotated through the medical clinic and was able to gain experience in several areas. She was able to help triage patients, shadow doctors and perform physical exams, assist in minor procedures, and fill prescriptions in the pharmacy.
Though she loved all those experiences, one of the highlights of her trip was when she was able to assist in a fetal ultrasound. "I will never forget the face of a pregnant mom, awestruck as she saw her baby on ultrasound for the first time," Farr said. "As her eyes teared up, we showed her the details of his precious face, his heart beating, and his little feet. She even pulled out her phone to take a picture so that she could remember this moment forever. That was probably one of the most special moments of my life, witnessing the miracle of a tiny life, and it reinforced my dream of becoming an OB/GYN when I grow up."
The clinic aided in physical ailments, but also led to opportunities to offer spiritual hope and rest. "We were able to serve over 1200 patients, and by the grace of God, over 200 professed faith in Jesus Christ," said Farr. Even after the team left Honduras, the church reported a large number of people from the clinic at their worship services the following Sunday. Farr notes that the church was a huge blessing all week allowing MMO to use classrooms and their sanctuary, and even providing interpreters.
Farr hopes this was her first of many trips with Medical Missions Outreach, and she would love to return to Roatán again.
