Lady Bruins Split Friday Matches

The Lady Bruins split their matches in a doubleheader on Friday in the first day of the Bruins Labor Day Tournament hosted in the Davis Field House. In their first game, the Lady Bruins fell to the Brewton Parker College Barons 3-2 but rebounded to sweep Dallas Christian College 3-0 in their second match.
 
The first set of the game was very evenly matched between the two teams, with the ties and lead changes going back and forth the entire set. A couple of errors late in the set brought the Lady Bruins within one but an out of bounds serve by the Lady Bruins cost them the set as the Barons won 25-23.
 
The beginning of the second set started out rough for the Lady Bruins as the Barons began with a 5-0 run. The Bruins answered with a run of their own, scoring six consecutive points to take a 6-5 lead over the Barons. The team was able to hold their lead in the set thanks to a kill by Erin Jarvis and some errors committed by the Barons. Ultimately, the Bruins held on to take the set 25-21 and even the match 1-1.
 
In the third set, the Bruins set the pace early on the by starting off on a 4-0 run. The Barons surged as they came back to back to take a lead 12-10. The Barons never looked back as they took the third set 25-18 including going on an 8-1 run. 
 
With the Bruins trailing 2-1 in the match, the Bruins were looking to climb back into the game. At first, it looked as if the Barons would continue their dominant runs into the fourth set as they got to a 4-0 run and then led the set by 15-9. The Bruins were able to come back thanks to another big kill by Jarvis and some kills by Katherine Ring as the pair sparked a rally for the team to overtake the Barons and win the set  25-20. 
 
In the fifth and final set, the Barons had another hot start to go up 4-0. The Bruins were back on their heels and never recovered as the Barons won the set 15-8 and the match 3-2. Katherine Ring led the game with 14 kills and Rachel Tubbs led the game in blocks with 9.
 
In their second match of the night, the Lady Bruins faced the Dallas Christian College Crusaders. The Bruins came out strong in the opening set an went on a dominant 7-0 run that forced the Crusaders to call a timeout early. After the timeout, the Bruins continued to command and a block and a kill by Marjorie Elliott ended the set with the Bruins capturing a 25-15 win.
 
The Bruins continued their success in the second set, taking an 11-3 lead early on. The Crusaders were forced to call a timeout with the Bruins leading 17-6. Despite a short 4-0 run by the Crusaders, the deficit was too much to make up as the Bruins took the set 25- 13.
 
The third set was the most evenly played set between the two teams. The Bruins once again took a 14-9 lead, but Dallas Christian couldn't overcome their own offensive struggles and errors, which cost them the set and ultimately the game. The Bruins won the set 25-16, claiming a 3-0 victory in the game.

"We played much better tonight than we did last week even though it was a loss", Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said.

Tomorrow, the Bruins will play again in day two of the Labor Day Tournament. In their first game of the day, the team will matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan University at the Davis Field House. "We have to bring our A-game tomorrow," Coach Denny said. "It's going to be a good test to see where we are at."
