Jacobs Finishes in Top-10 as Bruins Place 3rd at Regional Tournament

After posting their best score of the 2019 season in the opening round, the Bruins looked poised to contend for the NCCAA South Region Championship. Instead, the team came up short in the final round as they finished third overall among the four teams competing. Luke Jacobs led the Bruins as he placed 10th overall on the individual leaderboard.

"We were quite pleased with the round one although we all felt it could have been even better," Bruins Head Coach Dennis Scott said. "We were determined to go lower in the final round but we also knew it would be tough to catch either of the teams in front of us. Erskine is the defending national champion and CIU playing on their home course. We just wanted to finish strong, but the heat and humidity presented challenges late in round two and the fatigue factor in the second round of a two-day tournament is something you always have to anticipate."

The NCCAA South Regional Tournament featured four programs as the BJU Bruins would be matched with Erskine College, Columbia International University, and Brewton-Parker College. The two-day tournament would be played at Columbia Country Club in Columbia, South Carolina.

Keaton Osteen gave the Bruins a boost in the opening holes as the senior birdied back to back on holes four and five. Luke Jacobs also birdied the fifth hole as the team began to gain momentum.

Freshman Grant Bagwell had a near ace on the back nine, but had to settle for par. Jacobs continued his impressive round as he birdied the 15th hole. The Bruins were able to make several birdies and pars down the stretch as the team finished with their best score of the season at 314 (Jacobs - 76, Osteen - 78, Bagwell - 79, Childrey - 81, Wiginton - 94). After the opening round, the Bruins found themselves in 3rd place behind Erskine (288) and CIU (301).

In the final round, the Bruins started out the round well again as Haddon Wiginton parred the fifth hole. Jacobs was again consistent for the team as he recorded six pars on the front nine. Despite several holes, the Bruins struggled with consistency as par putts turned into bogeys. As a result, the Bruins finished the second round with a team score 321 (Wiginton - 79, Osteen - 80, Jacobs - 80, Bagwell - 82, Childrey - 85).

The Bruins finished 3rd overall of the four teams competing with Erskine College winning their second-straight region championship. Luke Jacobs finished 10th overall for the team with a two-day total 156 (76, 80).

"I believe we can take some confidence from this tournament to continue to build on," Coach Scott said. "Our season isn't over though we didn't reach nationals this year. We are still a relatively young and somewhat inexperienced team but we are definitely moving in the right direction. We are looking for improvement in each round and certainly felt like we accomplished that at regionals this year."

Next up, the Bruins will compete in the Piedmont College Fall Invitational October 14-15 in Clarkesville, Georgia.
