The Bruins baseball team remained winless on the season as the team struggled to get their bats going in a 9-0 loss to Toccoa Falls College on Friday afternoon in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 0-5 to begin the season and 0-3 in region play.
"It was a really tough day at the plate for us," Bruins Baseball Coach Brent Casteel said. "I do have to give credit to Toccoa's starting pitcher as he threw a great game. That said, I know our bats are better than we showed today."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of losses to Columbia International University on Tuesday in a home doubleheader. This would be the first road contest for the Bruins as they took the field against the Screaming Eagles for the first of a three-game series this weekend.
Toccoa struck first as they pulled ahead 1-0 in the second inning thanks to an error by the Bruins. The Screaming Eagles then tacked on two more in the third as Elisamuel Vazquez doubled to make it 3-0. Garrett Huskey continued to battle for the Bruins on the mound as the sophomore threw four complete innings giving up five hits while striking out three.
In the fourth inning, the Screaming Eagles blew the game open as a double by Jack Kraus scored three runs before Clifton Dempsey hit a two-run homerun as TFC racked up five runs in the fourth to lead 7-0. Unfortunately, the Bruins couldn't find their way back into the game as the team fell 9-0.
"Our pitchers showed a lot of character on the mound today," Coach Casteel said. "We have two more with Toccoa tomorrow and all we can do is learn from today and make sure we come out tomorrow ready to play."
The Bruins were able to record just three hits on the day in the loss. The team will be back in action on Saturday against Toccoa Falls in a doubleheader in Toccoa, Georgia. Game times are set for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
