Offensive struggles continued for the Bruins on Saturday as the team fell to Milligan University in back to back games of a Saturday doubleheader. With the losses, the Bruins fall to 0-3 on the season.
"We just couldn't get the bats talking when we needed to, but it will come," Bruins Head Baseball Coach Brent Casteel said. "We need to find the grit at the right times and not coast along in these games and hope the other teams make a mistake. We need to trust the hard work we've put in and go out and get it done."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of losing 5-1 in their season opener on Friday night. Henry Wallach pitched a strong game for the Bruins but the team struggled to get their bats going as they opened the season with a loss. The team looked to get into the winning column as they took the field for game one of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Freshman Joshua Legnard would be on the hill for the Bruins to start the game and he delivered with three scoreless innings as the game was tied at 0-0. The Bruins were more aggressive at the plate which led to runners on base, but the team couldn't seem to drive home runs.
Justin Greene broke the scoreless tie in the 4th inning with a solo homerun to give the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead. Milligan would extend their lead in the 5th as Anthony Guzman launched a two-run homerun to make it 3-0.
The Bruins were able to get one back in the bottom of the 5th inning as Riley Ramsey scored on a pass ball to make it 3-1. Unfortunately, the Buffaloes would answer right back with two more runs in the 6th inning and the Bruins couldn't recover as the team fell in game one of the doubleheader 10-3.
After a short break, the Bruins and Buffaloes were back on the field for the seiries finale. The Buffs came out strong as they stormed ahead scoring 13 runs in the second inning to take a large lead. Back on their heels, the Bruins tried to muster some offense to get back into the game but the team was only able to get one run in the game after Conley Burk singled home Bryson French in the 3rd. As a result, the Bruins fell to Milligan 13-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.
"We are not giving up," Coach Casteel said. "We need to focus on supporting each other to get us going in the right direction."
Next up, the Bruins will be back home on Tuesday, February 22 as the team welcomes St. Andrews University to Conestee Park.
