Bruins Rally Late to Split Friday Doubleheader Against Scots

The Bruins baseball team rallied with five runs in the 5th inning as the team battled back to win 5-4 over Covenant College in game two of their Friday doubleheader. With the win, the Bruins split the two games and improve to 2-11 on the season.

"I am proud of our guys," Bruins Head Coach Brent Casteel said. "They went out and seized the opportunity. We've told them over and over again that they have the potential to play well and tonight they went out and did it."

The Bruins came into the game on the heels of losing two of three in a weekend series against Toccoa Falls. The team was scheduled to play earlier in the week but the game was canceled due to rain.

The Scots entered Friday's doubleheader having lost two of their last three games. Both teams took the field on Friday afternoon with Henry Wallach getting the start for the Bruins on the mound.

The Scots jumped out to an early lead as Jackson Redman doubled to score a run and make it 1-0 in the top of the second. The Scots would add two more in the 3rd, but the Bruins continued to make key plays while Wallach delivered another strong performance on the mound for the team.

Offensively, the Bruins struggled to get anything going with their bats as the team managed just three hits in the game. As a result, the Scots were able to take game one of the doubleheader 4-0.

After a short break, the teams were back on the field to play game two. Josh Legnard would be on the hill for the Bruins in the second game and the freshman played well pitching four innings while striking out six.

The Scots again took an early lead as Zeke Gilbert scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 in the top of the 1st. The Scots added two more in the third inning as the team led 3-0. It looked to be deja vu for the Bruins as a double by Zeke Gilbert scored Kenny Mills to make it 4-0 heading into the 5th inning.

The Bruins responded well as Riley Ramsey hit a three-run inside the park homerun to close the gap 4-3. Daniel Barcena then gave the Bruins the lead with a two-run single to make it 5-4.

From there, the Bruins held off the Scots in the 6th and Jerry Dunwoody closed out the game in the 7th as the Bruins held on to win 5-4.

"We put our pitching and our hitting together in this game and got a win out of it," Coach Casteel said. "We have to keep pushing. We have to decide when we step on this field that it is time to go and time to play and make it happen."

Next up, the Bruins will be on the road Tuesday as the team plays a doubleheader against St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
