Scots Rally Late as Bruins Fall 11-5

A five-run seventh inning rally by Maryville College proved too much to overcome as the Bruins baseball team fell 11-5 on Tuesday night at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina. The Bruins led a majority of the game, but the Scots rallied late to spoil the Bruins hopes for a victory as the team falls to 5-21 on the season.

"Our guys came out ready to play tonight," Bruins Head Coach Brent Casteel said. "The wheels kind of fell off for us at the end of the game, but I am proud of the way the guys played against this team."

The Bruins came into the game on the heels of winning two of their last three games in a weekend series against Paine College. The team hoped to continue their winning ways as they welcomed the Scots who came into the game at 20-8 on the season. The two teams last met on March 29 with the Scots winning 11-1 in Maryville, Tennessee.

The Bruins jumped out to an early lead as Cole Pearson singled home Colby Hogan to give the team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Zach Burk then extended the lead in the 2nd inning with a sac fly to score Riley Ramsey and give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.

Max Bowers then put the Scots on the scoreboard with a solo homerun in the 4th inning to make it 2-1. The Bruins then extended their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning after two errors by the Scots made the score 4-1. After getting a run back in the 5th, the Scots trailed the Bruins 4-2.

The Bruins held the lead to the 7th inning but the Scots then sparked a rally as Nelson Smith hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at 4-4. The Scots weren't done as they scored three more runs to take a 7-4 lead.

Chad Bayne narrowed the deficit as he hit a sac fly to score Daniel Barcena in the bottom of the 7th to make the score 7-5. Gabe Lopez then hit a solo shot for the Scots in the 8th inning as Maryville scored a pair of runs to extend their lead 9-5. Unfortunately, the Bruins couldn't counter with runs as they fell 11-5 in the game.

"It just didn't come out in our favor in this game," Coach Casteel said. "We have been working on specific things in practice and we saw them do well in those things even tonight. We love that and seeing the guys continue to grow."

Next up, the Bruins will be on the road this weekend for a three-game series against Mid-Atlantic University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
