Bruins Win Game One But Can't Complete Comeback as Team Splits Doubleheader

The Bruins split Saturday's doubleheader against Mid-Atlantic Christian University to take the weekend series 2-1. Joshua Legnard threw a complete game in the Bruins 9-5 win over the Mustangs in the first game of the day. In game two, the Bruins would rally in the seventh inning scoring 11 runs, but they couldn't complete the comeback and fell 18-17. 

"The team showed a lot of heart today," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "After winning game one, they came back to score 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to come close to pulling out another win in game two. I'm proud of their efforts today!"

After a big 17-15 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Friday night, the Bruins were back in action with a noon start in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. 

As the game got underway, the Bruins saw a couple of hits before Daniel Barcena singled home a run to give Bob Jones the 1-0 lead. Shane Paruch got the second inning started with a homer to increase the lead for the Bruins.

At the top of the third inning, Cole Pearson hit one out of the park to double the score making it 4-0 in favor of the Bruins. But the scoring wasn't done yet as the Bruins would go on to score four more runs in the third. 

After Zach Burk singled in the top of the fourth, his brother Conley came in with a double to get Zach across home plate and bring the score to 9-0. 

The Mustangs began chipping away at the Bruins lead and were able to score five runs during the fourth and fifth innings. 

Bruins pitcher Joshua Legnard held them scoreless in the final two innings to throw a complete game and bring home the 9-5 win. 

After a short break, the Bruins were back on the field looking to build on the momentum from their first win of the day. 

The Bruins started of the game strong with two runs scored in the first inning, but saw themselves down 6-4 after two innings of play. 

In the third inning, the Mustangs extended their lead to 11 runs. Conley Burk hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to trim away at the deficit, but another solid inning for the Mustangs would see the Bruins down 15-6 after six. 

As the Bruins got to their final inning, they rallied back to score nine unanswered with 0 outs to tie the game in the seventh inning. Facing his former school, Chad Bayne hit a single that led to two RBI and the Bruins went up 17-15 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Bruins were unable to hold off the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh and ultimately fell 18-17 in their second game of the day. 

Some player highlights of the day include Chad Bayne going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI in game two of the day and Zach Burk who went 7 for 8 today. In the second game of the day, Burk had 4 RBI including a three-run double off the wall.

After today's games, the Bruins now sit at 7-22 on the season as they prepare for another doubleheader this coming Tuesday at Truett McConnell University.
