The Bruins dropped two very close games in today's doubleheader at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Bob Jones battled hard but fell 4-2 in game one and lost the second game of the day 7-5.
"Our team fought more on the field this weekend than any game they've played this season," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "I am thankful for their improvement."
The Bruins were back in action after falling in a tight 5-4 battle the night before in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
As the game got underway, the first inning would remain scoreless between the two schools. In the top of the second and bases loaded, Isaiah Brandt singled to shortstop allowing Daniel Barcena to score and put his team up 1-0.
Just like the first inning, at the top of the third the Bruins would see the bases loaded. But unlike the first, the Bruins were unable to capitalize and the inning ended with no runs scored and still 1-0 in favor of Bob Jones.
After striking out the first player, Bruins pitcher Joshua Legnard walked back to back runners in the bottom of the 3rd and just needed one more out to retire the Scots. With the next ball hit out to right field, the Scots would score both runners to give them the 2-1 lead.
The Scots scored again in the bottom of the fifth, and in a critical part of the inning, the Bruins would battle to end the inning and prevent two additional Scots men from scoring.
Conley Burk doubled to center field to kick off the sixth inning. He advanced to third after Shane Paruch grounded out. In prime scoring position, Burk would run home on a grounded out hit from Chad Bayne.
Heading into the final inning, the Bruins saw themselves down 4-2 and looked for a strong seventh inning but ultimately fell 4-2 in game one.
Following a brief intermission to prep the field and celebrate the Covenant College seniors, the two squads were back in action for game two.
The Scots got to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Bruins would come back in the fourth inning. A throwing error by Covenant allowed Riley Ramsey and Zach Burk to score giving them the 2-1 lead.
Bryson French walked to first to start the fifth inning. Chad Bayne came up with an RBI triple. Now with a runner at third with no outs, Isaiah Brandt came up to the plate with an RBI single to bring the score up to 4-1 in favor of the Bruins.
After a long review in the bottom of the sixth, the umpires would deem two Scot's runners safe and keep them on base. The Bruins looked to get out of this inning, but Scots came out swinging scoring six runs in the sixth to take the lead 7-4 headed in to the final inning.
To stay alive, the Bruins needed something big to happen in the top of the seventh. Chad Bayne would score in the final inning, but the Bruins would fall 7-5 in game two of the doubleheader.
Next up, Bob Jones is back home at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina for a Tuesday game against Brevard College.
