The Bob Jones University women's soccer team came away with a big 4-0 victory to wrap up the Meredith Soccer Classic in Raleigh, North Carolina this weekend.
"It was another fantastic job by the team today," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "Every player played an important role in this game and given we had two games in two days, they all stepped up and played a great game especially with how early in the season we are. I'm very proud of their effort and Meredith College played a strong game in the heat with a strong work rate."
Entering today's noon game, both the Bruins and Avenging Angels came off of Friday afternoon wins with the Bob Jones taking a 5-2 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University and Meredith College shutting out Grace Christian University 3-0.
As the game kicked off, both teams were searching for that first goal of the game with several looks both sides.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Meredith College's goalkeeper sent the ball into the field where the Bruins collected the ball and got it to Anna Grace Abrams where she soared the ball from about 30 yards out to get the Bruins on the board.
After the halftime break, Anna Grace Abrams was back at it with another rocket to double the lead for the Bruins in the 56th minute.
The Bruins continued pressing on the Avenging Angels net and in the 73rd minute, it was Kayle Stevenson who scored off of a corner kick. With the clock running down, Emily Walton raced down the near side of the field and passed the ball to Raegan Reed. Reed would send the ball in between two defenders back to Walton who crossed it in front of the net where Reed was there to poke it in.
The game ended with the Bruins on top 4-0. Bob Jones outshot Meredith College 20-6 with 14 of those shots coming in the second half.
"Although we got off to a rough start, we got back to our game plan and had a strong second half where possession was high and we began creating a number of goal scoring opportunities," said Coach Carmichael.
Up next, the Bruins are back in Greenville for their home opener on Tuesday, September 6 as they face Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
