Bruins Overtake Hawks to Finish Year On Top

In their final game of 2023, the Bruins men's basketball team finished the semester with a big 101-91 victory over Huntingdon College at the Davis Field House in Greenville, South Carolina. Today's result marked the first ever win over the Hawks as the Bruins remained undefeated at home and improved to 4-3 on the season.

"I am really happy that we finished out 2023 undefeated at home," said Head Coach Burton Uwarow.

The Bruins came into the contest up for the challenge as they faced a tough Huntingdon College program. Friday's game marked the third meeting between the Bruins and the Hawks with Huntingdon holding the 2-0 series record. The two teams first met in 2013 and then again 2019 where the Bruins fell in narrow defeats each time.

Huntingdon rolled to a early 6-0 lead as the Bruins struggled to make their opening shots. Camden Gearhart put the Bruins up on the board a few minutes later with an opening three point shot. As the first half continued, the Hawks held on to the lead as the Bruins worked to cut down at the deficit. At halftime, it was the Hawks on top 45-38.

After the break, the Bruins new they needed a big second half against the Hawks. The two teams exchanged buckets to open the second half before the Bruins went on a 16-2 run. The shots kept coming for the Bruins and with under 10 minutes on the clock Bob Jones dropped 10 points to take the lead. BJU kept climbing scoring 63 points in the second half to finish on top 101-91.

Elijah Cupples led the team with 25 points with Camden Gearhart, Shad Vander Hart, Trevor Brunson, and Devin Pope hitting double figures.

After the game Coach Uwarow commented saying, "I expected us to start out slow with this game coming at the end of exam week. We scored 63 points in the second half, had five guys in double figures with Shad Vander Haart and Camden Gearhart finishing with career highs."

The Bruins wrapped up the first semester of competition 4-3 on the season with all four wins coming at home. After a break for the holidays, the Bruins will travel to Jacksonville, Florida to open their region play with a road game against Trinity Baptist College on January 6.
