Bruins Shine in Region Win Against Trinity Baptist College

The Bruins rolled to a 88-76 victory over NCCAA South Region opponent Trinity Baptist College Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville, Florida. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 5-3 on the season.

"I was really proud of our first game back, and I was especially proud that we forced 20 turnovers," said Head Coach Burton Uwarow. "Trinity is a tough environment and we responded well by leading in the double digits a majority of the game."

Today marked the 17th meeting between the Bob Jones and Trinity Baptist College. With their first meeting dating back to October 2012, BJU entered Saturday's game leading the series 10-6.

From tip-off, the Bruins raced to an early 10-2 lead thanks to buckets from Elijah Cupples and Camden Gearhart. The Bruins maintained a fast pace of play and soared to an 18 point lead with 10 minutes left on the clock. The Eagles began chipping away at the deficit and after 20 minutes, the Eagles were down by just 10 points with the two teams heading in to the locker room with the Bruins leading 42-32

After the break, the Bruins got off to a hot start once again as Elijah Cupples opened the second half scoring with a three-pointer. Just five minutes into second half, a layup by Gearhart advanced the Bruins to a 20 point advantage. BJU struggled in the first half from the free throw line but improved in the second half to help hold off the Eagles. The Bruins continued to battle until the final whistle to pick up the 88-76 win.

Four Bruins recorded double figures as Elijah Cupples and Trevor Brunson led today's game with 20 points apiece followed by Camden Gearhart with 17 and Kenney Garrick with 10. BJU shot 53% from the field and were 64% from the free throw line.

Up next, the Bruins will return to the Davis Field House to host Trinity College of Florida for another south region matchup on Thursday, January 11.
