The Bruins baseball team picked up their first series win as they swept Friday's doubleheader against Mid-Atlantic Christian University. In game one of the day, the Bruins scored nine runs in the first inning to push them to a 16-7 win. Game two of the day saw a lot closer result as the Bruins battled to the very end to finish the day with a 3-2 victory. With today's results, the Bruins have improved to 2-1 on the season.
"I am really proud of our team. It was our second day on the field and still no quit in them," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "From start to finish, they kept the accelerator down and God blessed their efforts. I'm proud of each one of them."
After the Bruins fell 6-2 in their season opener to the Mustangs on Thursday, Bob Jones came out swinging in game one of today's doubleheader.
The Bruins blew the game wide open scoring nine runs in the first inning to gain momentum right from the beginning. After Mid-Atlantic got on the board in the bottom of the first, the Bruins didn't back down as BJU scored four more times in the second inning to increase their lead to 13-1.Â
Mid-Atlantic Christian University tried cutting down at the Bruins lead as they scored five more runs through the bottom of the third and fourth. But in the top of the sixth, the Bruins opened with two more runs to increase their lead back up to 10. The Bruins stayed strong and after seven innings, the Bruins held on for a big 16-7 win.Â
After a quick break, both teams were back on the field for game two of the day. The Bruins were able to get on the board early in the second inning to gain the slight advantage. But the Mustangs responded with two runs at the bottom of the second to grab their first lead of the day.Â
As the game progressed, the score remained the same despite solid efforts from both sides. As they entered the final inning, the Bruins needed some big moves to stay in the game. With runners on second and third, Zach Burk came swinging with a big hit to send Riley Ramsey and Conley Burk across home plate giving the Bruins the 3-2 lead. Mid-Atlantic didn't back down in the bottom of the final inning, but it was the Bruins who came out victorious in the 3-2 decision to sweep the doubleheader and take the weekend series.Â
Up next, the Bruins will travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to face Covenant College in a Saturday game on February 18.
