Baseball Team Falls on the Road to Covenant College

On the road in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, the Bob Jones University baseball team fell in a hard fought 16-2 loss to Covenant College Saturday afternoon. With today's loss, the Bruins sit at 2-2 on the season.

"It was a long day at the field today," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "Covenant's bats and pitching came out strong in the beginning and never let up. Our pitching did well seeing only four walks, but Covenant continued to get a bat on it. We put the bat on the ball and produced many runners, but it just wasn't enough. I'm happy that the team never gave up."

The Bruins entered the contest after a stellar showing against Mid-Atlantic Christian University last weekend. After falling in a tough loss last Thursday, the Bruins battled back to win their Friday doubleheader to open the 2023 season 2-1 on the year.

Today's game marked the first game of the season for the Scots. Last year, BJU and Covenant met five times through March and April with the Scots holding the 4-1 series record.

Riley Ramsey led off for the Bruins with a promising triple to put the Bruins in scoring position as the game got underway. Unfortunately, Ramsey would get left on base as the Scots closed out the top of the first inning.

Covenant got off to a hot start and in the bottom of the first saw eight runs on eight hits to take the early lead. The Scots then added two more onto their score in the bottom of the third.

As the fourth inning came around, Kamden Lance singled to left center giving Cody Kirkpatrick the chance to score for the Bruins. The Bruins continued to battle but Covenant went on to increase their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. BJU grabbed another run in the top of the sixth as Conley Burk grounded out to second base seeing Kamden Lance cross home plate.

At the end of the game, the Scots finished ahead 16-2.

Up next, the Bruins come home to Conestee Park for their home opener on Tuesday, February 21 against St. Andrews University. First pitch for Tuesday is set for 4 p.m.
