The Bruins began their spring break in Plantation, Florida to kick off a three game series against the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles Monday night. The Eagles recorded six runs as they shutout the Bruins in their first ever contest.
"I am really proud of our team tonight," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "Fort Lauderdale has scored 90+ runs in their last five games and 15+ each in of their last four games until tonight. Our team put in the effort, and I am proud of them for that."
Bob Jones made the trip to Florida with a 3-14 record looking to build off of their 9-8 win over Columbia International last week. Fort Lauderdale entered the week 15-13 and on a five game winning streak. The Eagles have been on an offensive tear as they have scored 96 runs in their last five games.Â
After being hit by the first pitch of the game, Riley Ramsey stole second and then advanced to third to sit in prime scoring position. Unfortunately, he was left on base as the Bruins went into the bottom of the first inning scoreless.Â
Bob Jones turned to Daniel Barcena on the mound. The Bruins kept the Eagles off the board until a sacrifice fly out to center field allowed Fort Lauderdale to strike first. The home team tacked on another run in the fifth to double their lead. A wild pitch in the following inning allowed for another run to score for the Eagles increasing their lead to 3-0.Â
After pitching for six innings with 10 strikeouts, Jerry Parker came in to relieve Barcena. A sacrifice fly followed by a 2 RBI single allowed the Eagles to score three additional runs in the bottom of the seventh.Â
The Bruins looked for a late-game rally, but came up empty as they were shutout by the Eagles 6-0. In tonight's loss, the Bruins only recorded three hits.
The two teams are back on the field on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. from Plantation, Florida.
