The women's volleyball team started the week on a high note as they earned a 3-0 sweep over Johnson & Wales University Tuesday night. With tonight's victory, the Bruins have improved to 12-2 on the season.
"Playing at Johnson & Wales is always a challenge with their loud crowd, but we were able to start strong and contain their big hitters which helped quiet the crowd," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "It was good win on the road for us."
The Bruins came into the week looking to get back in the win column after going 4-1 last week. After picking up a hard-fought 3-1 win at Brevard last Wednesday, the Bruins played host for four more games Friday and Saturday at the BJU Volleyball Invitational Tournament.Â
As today's game got underway, the Bruins got on the board first before a back and forth effort between the two teams. The Bruins then surged to a seven point run to put them in the lead. A service error by the Wildcats gave Bob Jones the 25-11 first set win.Â
Set two got off to a hot start for the Bruins and after a long rally between teams saw the Bruins up early 9-1. Johnson & Wales looked to claw back, but it was the Bruins that remained on top with a 25-18 set win.Â
The Bruins looked to finish the game out strong, and halfway through the third set Eden Swihart served up an ace to put the Bruins ahead 13-6. It was Jaime Robinson who sealed the deal for Bob Jones with back-to-back aces to give her team the 25-11 set win.Â
With today's 3-0 sweep over the Wildcats, the Bruins have now won 11 straight against the North Carolina school. Timbre Cruz and Katherine Hoopes led the Bruins with 10 kills a piece at the end of today's match.Â
Up next, the Bruins go up the mountain to Asheville, North Carolina for a Thursday night competition against Warren Wilson College.Â
