The Bruins were back in action at the Cougar Classic during the morning time slot. They would first take on the Randolph College Wildcats and then later finish their weekend matches against Roanoke College Maroons.
After the first day of competition, the Bruins were sitting at 2-0. The competition was fierce, but the Bruins swept both Hollins University (25-8, 25-17, 25-21) and Averett University (26-24, 25-20, 25-16).
After beating Averett University, Head Coach Vickie Denny shared, "different players stepped up at different times to lead our team to a 3-0 win. While it was a sweep, all three sets went back and forth with some outstanding plays made by both teams."
In the first match of day two, the Bruins would get off to a quick 1-0 lead after their first set. Set two would go back and forth, but the Bruins would drop this one in a thrilling 23-25. That would tie the match at 1-1. The Bruins would have no trouble in the third set as they would cruise to a 25-16 win. After the fourth set, the Wildcats would force a fifth set. The final set would once again be back and forth, but the Bruins would come out on top winning the match 3-2.
Head Coach Vickie Denny commented, "in the five-set thriller against Randolph we were pushed and responded well. Winning in five came right down to the last few points. It was a solid performance for our first competitions."
With match three all wrapped up, only one opponent remained for the weekend. The final match would get started with the Bruins taking on the Roanoke Maroons. The Bruins would have no trouble with this match and would down the Maroons in three straight sets (25-16, 25-19, 25-15). The Bruins would improve their season record to 4-0.
"With the 4-0 record we won the tournament. That is the first time winning it since we began coming a few years ago," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "It was a good weekend of great competition."
With the Cougar Classic all wrapped up, the Bruins will look ahead to next weekend. The team will be once again on the road where they will open conference play in the NCCAA South Regional kickoff. There they will face Toccoa Falls College, Pensacola Christian College, Trinity College, and Trinity Baptist College. Stay up to date with all your Bruins news at
