Bruins Roar and Sweep Piedmont University 3-0

The Bruins were on the road again Tuesday evening to face the Piedmont University Lions. The Bruins were hunting for their 14th win of the season and for their sixth straight over Piedmont. The Lions proved to be a tough team over the three sets that were played.

The two teams were in a constant struggle to control the first set. With neither team able to take control, the set became a very back and forth effort. The Bruins would take a 16-9 lead at one point in the set, but a run by the Lions brought them back to a slim 17-15 lead still in favor of the Bruins. The run by the Lions would force a timeout to slow them down and not let the set get out of control. The Bruins refocused their attention and got right back into the set to finish strong. Victoria Glaze would put the team on her back as she dominated the first set with seven kills and the Bruins would win the set 25-21.

The second set started out very much in favor of the Bruins as they quickly jumped to a 6-1 lead. The Lions weren't having it and came back like it was nothing to tie the set back at 6-6. Once the score was tied, it was like the first set never ended. Both teams continued to go back and forth with the Bruins only holding a slight lead for most of the set. The Bruins would climb to 24 points and would stall slightly, but Timbre Cruz would finish the set with a kill to win 25-21.

After the third set got underway, it looked like the Lions might try and capitalize on a slow Bruins start. Within just a few moments the Bruins were back on top and leading the final set. The Bruins kicked it into high gear to finish the night off strong and would go on a couple runs to win the set 25-16.

"Playing in Piedmont's gym is always challenging," Head Coach Vickie Denny started staying. "We struggled offensively in set two but Emily Lewis made some big blocks to shut down their big hitters while the back row made some great defensive reads. Overall it was a good win against a solid opponent."

Next up, the Bruins will be home for a match against rival Pensacola Christian College on Friday, September 29. The match will take place in the Davis Field House at 7 p.m.
