Golf Team Opens Season with Exhibition in North Carolina

The Bruins golf team opened their season with an exhibition tournament against Montreat College at Black Mountain Golf Club in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Ten golfers from each school would compete in the match-play style event.

The course was tough for the young group of Bruins who competed today. Missed opportunities led to the downfall of the match where the Bruins would lose 7.5 to 2.5.

"We were behind in all 10 matches at the turn. Though some of those matches were just 1-down, we dug a pretty deep hole early in the match and it was difficult to get out of it," said Head Coach Denny Scott. "Montreat definitely had the home-course advantage, but we certainly should have played better. It was a good dose of reality to help us realize where we are in the preparation process and how far we need to go to get to where we want to be."

Despite the loss, there were some positives on the course today as the Bruins played a strong back nine which led to a few points going their way.

Coach Denny Scott commented, "this is why we play exhibition matches, to gain experience and perspective. It was a great opportunity to see our relatively young and inexperienced team under competitive pressure. We will build on this experience and get better."

The golf team will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, September 11-12, at the Alice Lloyd Fall Invitational in Prestonburg, KY. Make sure to follow along at BJUbruins.com.
