Bruins Claw Out Win on the Road

The Bruins struggled on the road due to a great match by the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles, but were still able to come away with a 2-0 win.

"I would like to first congratulate Coach John Drouse of Toccoa Falls and his team for giving us a great match and for pushing us to work hard for our two goals," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "They have come a long ways and showed tonight why they have had such a successful fall season."

The first half was one of slight frustration for the Bruins. They struggled to possess for a long amount of time and only had a limited number of chances to score. The defense held strong against a few counter-attacks from the Screaming Eagles and didn't allow them to score. The Bruins managed to score on a corner kick in the 21st minute delivered into the box by Mia Marks into the foot of Shannon Miller. That marked Miller's 4th goal and Marks' 7th assist of the season. The Bruins went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

"We struggled with possession early in the first half but eventually started finding our rhythm which created some looks on goal," Coach Carmichael said.

The Bruins came out more determined and had more control and possession in the second half but struggled to score. The away fans kept it a tense environment, but the traveling Bruins fans provided some encouragement in the close match. The defense held strong again and were able to hold the Screaming Eagles scoreless all game, despite the chances they got. The Bruins were able to extend their lead in the 54th minute from a goal by Francesca Peters that went off the goalkeeper's hands. Though the match remained close, Coach Carmichael put in his subs for some minutes to gain confidence in a close game. Most of them finished the match in which the 2-0 lead held for the Bruins win.

After the match, freshman Lily Davis noted the team's recovery from the bad start. "After a rough start of the game, Shannon finished a ball from a corner kick that Mia took and gave us good momentum. The goal by Francesca ended up sealing our win."

Freshman Naomi Peters added to that thought. "Our team had a bit of a slow start, but we started connecting and had some great goals that eventually added another win to our season," she said.

The Bruins have a good amount of rest before their next match that they can clean up their play with. They next play at Carolina University on October 23 with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
