The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team earned their 14th straight win in a 3-0 decision against Piedmont University. With today's home win, the Bruins have improved to 19-8 on the season.
Today's game marked the 12th meeting between the Bruins and the Lions. The two volleyball programs met earlier this year in Demorest, Georgia where the Bruins picked up the 3-0 win.
It was a competitive start as the two teams kept it close to begin the match. The Bruins pulled ahead to a slight lead and looked to hold it throughout the opening set. With just three more points needed to close out the first set, the Lions went on a five-point run to close the gap, but the Bruins wrapped up the set on top 25-18.
A big kill by Hannah Goodwin opened the second set scoring. The Bruins soon pulled to an early 6-1 advantage. Piedmont inched their way back into the game to get within one at 11-10. It remained tight throughout the remainder of the set with some long rallies as each team battled for their points. Hannah Goodwin closed out the set with a kill to put the Bruins ahead 2-0 in the match with the 25-21 set win.
Piedmont and Bob Jones went back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the third set as errors by the Bruins put points on the board for Piedmont. The Bruins soon saw their biggest lead of the set at 14-11. The two teams continued to battle for points. BJU was the first team to 20 points leading the Lions by four points. It wasn't the prettiest win, but the Bruins wrapped up the third and final set 25-18 to complete the 3-0 sweep over Piedmont University.
Following the game, Assistant Coach Victoria Dunnwoody said, "we've had a few days of break where we've really been focusing on our defense. We saw our defense do really well tonight with six blocks and about 18 digs per set. We're really proud of our defense, but we lacked a bit of offense connectivity so we're going to go back and work on that again."
She continued saying, "today exposed some things we need to focus on, so we'll get back in the gym and work on those. These next few games are important games for us, and I think it will be a good show of where we're at."
Up next, the Bruins will travel to North Carolina for a weekend of games against Carolina University, Salem College, and Pfeiffer University.
