Women's Volleyball Falls to Carolina University in Battle of the Bruins

From Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bob Jones University and Carolina University played in the Battle of the Bruins where BJU fell in four sets to Carolina. Today's loss marked the first defeat for Bob Jones in over a month.

Bob Jones opened the scoring from Williams Gymnasium. Carolina University then took the lead as BJU worked to keep it close, but it was the CU Bruins who took the first win of the match 25-19.

Set two began with the score kept close before Carolina pulled ahead to a 12-7 lead off of back-to-back errors by Bob Jones. The two teams continued to fight but it was Carolina who came out ahead 25-22.

The BJU Bruins looked to stay alive in the third and worked to gain an early lead, but Carolina came back to even the scoreline 8-8. The CU Bruins then took the 13-12 lead but it didn't hold long as the BJU Bruins worked to take the 16-14 advantage. BJU pulled ahead to a 20-17 cushion but mistakes allowed Carolina to tie the game at 21 points apiece. Bob Jones recovered to stay in the game and take set three 25-23.

In the fourth set, Carolina got out to an early lead and held it through most of the set. The BJU Bruins worked to close the gap and found themselves trailing by three at 21-18. Bob Jones continued to battle and got within one at 23-22. But the CU Bruins took the set 25-22 to win the match 3-1.

Hannah Goodwin led the Bruins with 16 kills while Faith Blalock recorded a double double with 13 kills and 15 digs.

"We battled hard but came up short against a veteran Carolina team," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "They had a well-balanced offensive attack, and we couldn't find the right defensive strategy to stop their strong hitters. It is good for us to go up against these teams to reveal where we still need work. We look forward to our rematch on our home court in a few weeks."

Tomorrow the Bruins will continue their road trip with a trimatch in Misenheimer, North Carolina as they face Salem College and Pfeiffer University.
