Bruins Beat Edward Waters with Late Goal

Box Score The Bruins came away with a win against the Edward Waters University Tigers with a final score of 2-1.

Head Coach Chris Carmichael wrote this recap with the best perspective:

First, my hat goes off to Edward Waters University. They were one of the most challenging teams we have played as they were relentless on the defending side and constantly dangerous on the attacking side. No doubt they will do well in their NCAA DII conference. I am so extremely proud of this team for just gutting out a challenging day especially after going down 1-0 in the first half.

We had a good chat at halftime and the team came out and were able to start controlling the game and were able to create a number of goal scoring opportunities. I have to give a big shout out to Abby Arrowood, Jessica Townsend, Elli Cummings and Jane Farr as they worked incredibly hard to stop the Tigers' talented strikers that just kept coming at us with speed. They stood strong and just played an amazing game. Midge Cummings also played a phenomenal game and made some amazing stops that kept us in the game. Our defensive line continued to also be a threat in the attacking half with forward runs. Elli Cummings was able to score an indirect goal with a beautiful setup from Mady Pfaffenroth that equalized the game shortly after the Tigers goal.

Then Shannon Miller received a dime of a pass from Celeste Baladi and was able to notch the winning goal in the 78th minute. I couldn't be more proud of this team and their resilience to keep working hard for the win is amazing especially given we were down 1-0. God continues to bless their efforts and we praise Him through thick and thin.

After the game, Shannon Miller talked about the Bruins efforts. "I think our team can be proud of our performance today as we kept our heads after being down 1-0," she said. "The work ethic was there throughout, but especially picked up in the second half. I think our team pulled together because of many fantastic saves from our keeper Midge Cummings and a strong equalizer from Elli Cummings. Both these gave us some great momentum to get the end result. I'm really happy with a strong effort from every member of our team."

Elli Cummings, who Coach Carmichael named player of the match, praised the team for the hard fought win. "We worked hard today as a team today. They came out strong and hit us early, but the defense did phenomenal keeping us in the game," she said. "We were able to get a free kick in the first half where we could tie the game and the offense really pulled through in the second half and made it possible for us to take home the win."

The Bruins play again tomorrow against Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
