Bruins Overtake Avenging Angels to Pick Up First Win of the Season

The Bob Jones University women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season in a 50-35 decision over the Meredith College Avenging Angels.

In their first-ever meeting, Meredith College made their way to the Davis Field House for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Bob Jones University in the Davis Field House.

It was a low-scoring first half as the Bruins and Avenging Angels worked to find a rhythm. Four minutes into the game, Meredith got the first two points of the contest. Keely Price then opened the Bruins account with a jump shot halfway through the first quarter. A layup by Kayley Trump with 20 seconds left tied the game 8-8. The Bruins struggled to hit their shots from out deep as they finished the first quarter 0-9 from outside the three-point line

Anna Layne Wylder opened the second quarter with the first three-pointer of the game to put the Bruins ahead 11-8. After falling slightly behind, Jenna Brooks found her spot behind the three-point line to put the Bruins ahead by one halfway through the second quarter. At halftime, the Bruins went back to their locker room down 21-25.

Meredith pulled to a nine point advantage after halftime before Kayley Trump opened the second half scoring for the Bruins to chip away at the deficit. With less than a minute left in the third, Kayley Trump stole the ball and made her layup to see the Bruins retake the lead. At the end of the third quarter, Diamynd Buckson made her shot from the free throw line to see the Bruins with the slight 37-35 advantage over the Avenging Angels.

The Bruins got off to a good start in the final quarter. Their defense held strong and didn't allow the Avenging Angels to score the entire 10 minutes. At the final buzzer, it was Bob Jones on top 50-35 to take their first win of the season.

Offensively, Kayley Trump led the Bruins with 13 points while teammate Keely Price led the team with 13 rebounds.

Following the game, Head Coach Mike LeViere said, "the team did a great job tonight fighting through a game where we weren't at our best. We have talked a lot this year about doing the little things and how much they matter. Meredith out-rebounded and outplayed us in the first half. Thankfully the game lasts 40 minutes and it took the whole game for us to keep working and doing enough to come out the victor on the scoreboard."

He continued saying, "this team is getting better all the time and the improvement isn't always linear. There will be ups and downs. The key is we have to keep focused on doing the next best thing. It's great to get our first win, but our focus is on ourselves and our improvement."

Up next, the Bruins go on the road for a weekend tournament in Gallatin, Tennessee to take on Southeastern Baptist College and Welch College on Friday and Saturday.
