Women's Basketball Team Picks Up Region Win Over Southeastern Baptist

Box Score
The Bob Jones University women's basketball team have won their second game of the season in a 54-44 victory over NCCAA South Region opponent Southeastern Baptist College. With today's road win, the Bruins have improved to 2-4 on the season and now sit at 1-0 in conference play.

"I am very happy with our team's performance today," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "After a hard long day of travel it was great to see us come out of the gate strong and competing hard the entire game."

From the Welch College Activity Center in Gallatin, Tennessee, the Bruins faced off against the Southeastern Baptist College Chargers for just the second time in program history.

As Friday night's contest got underway, Anna Layne Wylder got the Bruins on the board early with a quick layup. The two programs exchanged buckets through the opening minutes to keep the score close. With just over six minutes left in the first quarter, a layup by Wylder followed by a three-pointer by Caitlyn Dickerson put the Bruins ahead by five at 13-8. The three-pointers kept coming as Imani Pouncey drained hers to keep the Bruins lead. After ten minutes of play, the Bruins led 24-17.

The Bruins struggled to score as the second quarter got started and halfway through the Chargers knotted the score at 24 all. At halftime, the Bruins trailed 31-26.

After the break, BJU worked to close the gap built by the Chargers. At the buzzer of the third quarter, Imani Pouncey collected the ball and sprinted down the court to make her layup to tie the score at 37-37.

Kayley Trump's opening layup of the final ten minutes of play gave the Bruins back their first lead since the second quarter. Imani Pouncey went coast to coast to sink her layup followed by an immediate by Keely Price to put Bob Jones ahead 43-37 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the contest. The team continued to control and finished the game on top 54-44.

"We didn't the handle the ball extremely well, but we worked hard on defense and forced a lot of turnovers," said LeViere after the game. "We fought through the some tough foul situations where we had Keely Price and Jenna Brooks with three fouls early and that affected the game for sure. Kayley Trump had maybe her best game yet and Caitlyn Dickerson also came through with some clutch free throws."

Coach LeViere continued saying, "our bench was huge. We are young but learning and getting better all the time and it's exciting to think about that. We keep getting better."

Up next, the Bruins take on Welch College for a 2 p.m. contest in Gallatin, Tennessee.
