The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team opened their postseason play with a big 3-0 sweep over Trinity Baptist College in the semifinals of the NCCAA DII South Region tournament. With today's win, the Bruins advance to the region championship match on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Toccoa Falls, Georgia.
"Today's game was our next step to winning regionals," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "We had good contributions from several players in today's match which helped secure the win. We are ready for tomorrow!"
Bob Jones wrapped up their regular season going 25-10 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. This earned them the #1 seed heading into the tournament.
In Friday's semifinal contest, the Bruins faced off against #4 Trinity Baptist College. The TBC Eagles got on the board first in today's game after some early errors by the Bruins. Bob Jones soon pulled together to gain the lead. Faith Blalock strung together several service aces to see the Bruins increase their lead to 16-5 over the Eagles. A strong kill by Hannah Goodwin sealed the set one win 25-7.
In set two, the Bruins got off ot a hot 7-0 run before a net violation put the Eagles on the board. But the Bruins got the ball and point right back with a kill from Faith Blalock. Bob Jones continued to dominate and wrapped up the second set 25-9 with a Faith Blalock kill.
Elyse Vest opened the serving and scoring for the Bruins at the top of set three with an ace. Trinity Baptist kept it close through the first few points of the set. But similar to the first two sets, the Bruins pulled ahead to a sizable advantage and held on to take the final set 25-11 in the 3-0 sweep.
Bob Jones looks to add to their hardware accumulated throughout the tournament as Faith Blalock was named Region Player of the Year, Head Coach Vickie Denny earned Coach of the Year honors, and four Bruins players received a spot on the All-Region team. In tomorrow's region championship, the Bruins will take on the winner of Friday's second semifinal match between #2 Pensacola Christian College and #3 Toccoa Falls College.
