Tough Home Opener for the Bruins as they Lose to Concordia University

The Bruins baseball team played their first home games of the season against visiting team Concordia University Ann Arbor. In game one, the Bruins fell 9-4 and in game two the Bruins lost 12-3. Through two games, the Bruins produced 14 hits and another 14 strikeouts.

"Our guys have a lot of fight in them, and I'm very thankful for that," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "They've worked hard and they've put in a lot of effort and showed it on the field tonight."

Game 1
Josh Legnard got the nod to start game one for the Bruins and Riley Ramsey batted leadoff. The top of the first, the Bruins kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard while allowing only one base runner from a walk. In the bottom of the first, the Bruins got started early with Angelo Gomez making it around the bases to score the first run of the game. A couple others made it on base, but were unfortunately left stranded on the base path.

Things really started heating up in the second inning as the Cardinals scored six runs to take the lead. The Bruins responded by scoring two more runs off the bat of Riley Ramsey who hit a triple to clear the bases.

Going into the third inning, the Bruins made it quick for the Cardinals with three up and three down. The bottom of the third found Angelo Gomez on the base paths again. Matthew Wells would bring him home on an RBI single. Wells would be stranded at first after Stinson Draper grounded out to third base to end the inning.

The fourth inning was quiet for both teams on the scoreboard, but they both had runners on before stranding them. In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals tacked on two more and kept the Bruins quiet as they went up three up and three down. It was another quiet sixth for both teams with no more runs being added, but each team left a couple more on the bases. Finally getting into the seventh, the Bruins allowed the Cardinals to score one more run to extend their lead 9-4 which would ultimately end up being the final score as the Bruins couldn't make anything happen in the bottom of the seventh.

Game 2
After a quick intermission, both teams were back out there for the second game of the day. The Cardinals wasted no time putting up three runs to start the game and in the bottom of the inning, the Bruins couldn't get anything going.

Moving into the second inning, the Cardinals tacked on another three runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Bruins. The Cardinals relentless hits forced the Bruins to pull out starting pitcher Henry Wallach. Jason Quillin took over for him and pitched for three more innings. In response, the Bruins got themselves on the board with three runs to cut the lead down to 6-3 and stranding two more.

The Cardinals went three up, three down in the top of the third which allowed the Bruins to get themselves back into it. After a couple of guys were hit by a pitch, a ground out to the catcher would end the inning and two more guys would be stranded.

The Bruins would remain shut out for the remainder of the game while the Cardinals continued to dominate on the bases. The Cardinals got a run in the top of the fourth, two more runs in the top of the fifth, and three more runs in the top of the sixth. The seventh left two man stranded for the Cardinals while the Bruins went three up and three down. Bruins dropped game two 12-3.

Coach Casteel continued, "this team is actually ranked nationally in NAIA, which means scholarship players for them, so I'm very proud of the fight our guys put up and to keep the score at what they did, I think they had a great game."

Up next, the Bruins will finish the series against Concordia University on Monday at 12:00 p.m. from Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina. You can watch the game live here.
