The Bruins golf team finished out their match play exhibition against Montreat College in a 4-4 tie. This exhibition was the first action of the Spring season for the Bruins as they now turn their attention towards the Columbia International University Spring Invitational.
"There were eight individual singles matches with BJU winning four of them and Montreat winning four of them," began Head Coach Denny Scott. "Since this was an exhibition there was no need to break the tie. Timmy battled all the way to the 18th hole to try and earn a half point for the win, but he had a tough opponent. They were well matched, and it was exciting and fun to watch."
Bruins golfers Timmy Smith, Grant Camfield, Dakota Holt, Spencer Cable, Josiah Swaffer, Michael Abdo, Brandon Autry, and Nicholas Smith all competed today. Spencer, Josiah, and Nicholas all had strong rounds, each one winning a full point for the team. Grant also had a strong round and was the first to finish his match for a full point.
Today's exhibition turned into a back-and-forth match between the two teams. The Bruins were able to take an early lead over Montreat 2-0, but would drop the third point. The Bruins would take the fourth to make it 3-1, but Montreat wouldn't go down easily. Montreat cut the lead 3-2, but Josiah got the Bruins another point to make it 4-2. Trying to keep it interesting, Montreat once again stole another point to keep it close 4-3 and it would take until the very last hole to decide the outcome of the day. Timmy Smith battled it out until the very end, but couldn't get it done and Montreat tied it at 4-4.
"Even though this exhibition ended with a tie, this was a great start to the Spring season," said Coach Scott. "We built some confidence going into the CIU tournament next week. We will also look forward to coming back to Greer Golf Club later this Spring to defend the Competitor's Cup."
Up next, the Bruins will be competing in the CIU Spring Invitational. The invitational will take place over two days on February 26 and 27.
