Legnard Pitches Shutout in Split with Covenant College

The Bob Jones University Bruins finished a doubleheader today against the Covenant College Scots at a neutral site after the home field got rained out. Henry Wallach got the nod to start game one for the Bruins and pitched a strong game, but the Scots scored the go ahead in run in the seventh to take game one 3-2. In game two of the day, Joshua Legnard pitched a shutout game as the Bruins took game two 4-0.

"Great performance from our pitching staff all day. Henry Wallach and Noah Weaver held them to 3 runs, in the first game and Legnard finished with a shutout," said Head Coach Brent Casteel.

At the beginning of the of the week, the Bruins were looking forward to hosting a home series against Covenant College, but another rainstorm made its way through the same area the Bruins were going to be in. A rainy Friday morning forced the coaches to cancel Friday's single game and ultimately forced the teams to need to find a neutral site to play at for the Saturday doubleheader. The programs found that site at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Saturday afternoon, the Bruins and Scots got things underway with Wallach starting the game. The Scots got the scoring started right away putting up a run in the first inning. In response, the Bruins put up two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning. For the next three innings, both teams would threaten to put up more runs, but the Bruins held their 2-1 lead through five innings.

The top of the sixth found the Scots tying up the score 2-2. To the Bruins dismay, they were unable to convert any runs in the sixth and retake the lead. Unfortunately, the Scots scored another run in the seventh before shutting out the Bruins again in the bottom of the inning. The Bruins lost game one with a final score of 3-2.

Henry Wallach struck out five batters and only let up one walk before Noah Weaver relieved him to close the game. Riley Ramsey and Kamden Lance both hit doubles in the game to add to the team's six total hits.

After a short break between games, the Bruins and Scots were right back it. Joshua Legnard pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and a walk while allowing only seven hits. The Bruins got things started right away with a three runs scoring in the bottom of the first inning. As the game progressed, the Scots challenged the Bruins getting runners on base, but the Bruins kept them off the scoreboard all game.

The final run was scored in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Bruins lead 4-0. Legnard pitched two more strong innings to shutout the Scots and the Bruins would split the day winning game two 4-0. Another seven hits were added to the day while also drawing two walks. The Bruins return with an improved record of 3-13.

Coach Casteel continued, "Proud of the boys for getting the bat on the ball all day. Second game we produced enough timely hits to cross the plate four times. Great effort all day!"

Up next, the Bruins will be off for spring break before returning to action against Truett McConnell University on March 26.
