The Bob Jones University men's golf team finished a two-day golf outing, competing in the Johnson and Wales University Spring Invitational. The competition was played on a par 72 at the Cramerton Mountain Golf Course in Cramerton, North Carolina. After two days of competition, the Bruins had played their way into a fourth-place finish. Additionally, Timothy Smith found his way into a tie for fifth place on the player leaderboard.
The invitational was set for March 25 and 26 with the first day getting set with a shotgun start. Players were paired into teams of two while team scores were calculated playing six, scoring four. After the first day, Bob Jones stood in third place with a team score of 326.
Ten teams would take the course over the two days of competition. Johnson and Wales University, the host, would field two teams with Savannah State, Paine, Georgia Military, Saint Andrews, Bryan, Mars Hill, and USC-Sumter making up the rest of the competitive field.
Competing for the Bruins over during the duration of the event would be six individuals paired into three teams. Timothy Smith and Michael Abdo, Nick Smith and Brandon Autry, Spencer Cable and Josiah Swaffer, and last but not least Grant Camfield and Dakota Holt were the Bruins to make the teams during the competition.
After the first day of competition, Timothy Smith and Michael Abdo were tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard with a score of 79 each. Nick Smith finished his first day with an 82 followed by Josiah Swaffer with a score of 86. Those four would give the Bruins team a third-place finish after day one. Brandon Autry finished his first round with an 87 and Spencer Cable rounded out the Bruins six-man team with a 95. In addition to the six-man team, Dakota Holt finished his first round with an 85 and Grant Camfield with an 86.
Day two of the competition started out in a similar fashion with a shotgun style of play, but the day's progression seemed to take a toll on the Bruins. Timothy improved his scorecard to a 76 during the second day and that landed him a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard of around 50 golfers. Additionally, Timothy and Michael Abdo finished sixth on the two-person team leaderboard.
Overall, the Bruins placed fourth in the Johnson and Wales Spring Invitational with a final score of 661. Finishing ahead of the Bruins was Georgia Military with a 613, Paine College with a 641, and Saint Andrews with a 653.
Timothy had the best second round for the Bruins with a 76. Brandon Autry finished close behind with an 80 followed by Josiah Swaffer with an 85. Spencer Cable rounded out the top four scores for the Bruins with a 94. Michael Abdo finished his second round with a 99 and Nick Smith with a 100. The two individual golfers for the Bruins, Grant Camfield and Dakota Holt, finished with a 92 for Camfield and 97 for Holt.
"Overall, our team underperformed and therefore underachieved," said Head Coach Denny Scott. "While the experience gained for some of our younger players was beneficial, the results showed that we still have a lot of work to do in developing competitive consistency."
Up next, the Bruins have one final competition for the year as they get ready to host the Competitor's Cup on April 8 and 9 in Greer, South Carolina.
