Bruins Fall in Seven Innings to Montreat College

After seven innings of play, the Bruins fell in a 11-1 decision to Montreat College Tuesday night from Conestee Park. With today's loss, the Bruins now sit at 6-23 on the year.

"We've had enough losing, but the guys fought well. Montreat is a tough team," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "Freshman Mikey Terribile came out and did a good job on the mound, and I appreciate the effort that he gave tonight. We just couldn't get the hits that we needed."

Today's game marked the sixth meeting between the Bruins and Cavaliers with each previous contest going in favor of Montreat.

It was a beautiful day at the ballpark as today's game got underway at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.

Mikey Terribile had a great start to the contest as he kept the Cavaliers to three hits and no runs through the first couple of innings. In the top of the third, Montreat College got on the scoreboard with a three run inning.

In the bottom of the third, Zay Brandt got the first hit of the game for the Bruins in his first at bat as he sent the ball down the third base line for a two out single. But he was left stranded as Kyle Prouse was struck out to end the inning.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins looked to find a way as Kam Lance singled to bring up Pablo Austin. Austin's single put Lance in scoring position. Cody Kirkpatrick then sailed the ball to centerfield, but the Montreat defense got under the ball to end the fourth inning with the Bruins still empty on the scoreboard.

The top of the sixth brought some more offensive power from the Cavaliers. With bases loaded and only one out of the board, Richard De La Cruz hit it out of the park for a grand slam to add to the total for Montreat. Ryan Pierce then came in to relieve Terrible and struck out his first batter of the day as the Bruins looked to get out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Montreat tallied two more runs to have an 11 run lead over the Bruins. As the Bruins came up to bat, Austin earned a leadoff walk. Kirkpatrick was then hit by a pitch to get on base behind Austin. Sam Gonzalez hit the ball towards third base but a big throw to first base saw him with the first out of the inning. A sac fly from Chad Bayne allowed Austin to score putting the Bruins on the scoreboard. Brandt's ball flied out to right field to close out the inning.

Tuesday's game ended with the 10 run rule in place at the conclusion of the seventh inning.

Up next, the Bruins travel to Jacksonville, Florida to face NCCAA region opponent Trinity Baptist College for a weekend series.

When speaking of this weekend, Coach Casteel said "we have a great opportunity to go, show up, and play the game that we're capable of playing."
