Bruins Survive Late Run By Brevard

The Bob Jones University Bruins survived a late run by Brevard College to finish on top 9-8 from Conestee Park. With today's home win, the Bruins have improved to 9-24 on the season.

"I'm happy we pulled it out today," said Zay Brandt. "We stayed together as a team and fought to the end. I'm happy we got the dub."

The Bruins came into today's game after a 2-1 series win over region opponent Trinity Baptist College over the weekend. Today's game marked the fourth meeting between the two teams. After today's win, the Bruins have evened the series at two wins apiece.

As today's game got underway, Mikey Terribile got the start on the mound for the Bruins. After the first Brevard batter flew out to left field, Conley Burk made a great defensive play to assist on the second out of today's contest. The Bruins went three up, three down for a great start to the Tuesday contest.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Conley Burk walked to be the first batter to get on base. Down in the count, Kam Lance hit one towards the left center fence for an RBI double as Burk raced home to open the scoring for the Bruins.

Brevard responded in the top of the second as the ball was hit deep into right field to score two for the Tornados as they took the 2-1 lead.

BJU answered in a big way in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Kirkpatrick walked to get on base. A dropped third strike followed by an error on first base allowed Brandt to make it to first and courtesy runner Davis Carr to third. It was the top of the order as the Bruins turned to Kyle Prouse. A wild pitch got past the catcher sending Carr across home to even the score. With two on base and two outs on the board, Evan Walker hit it deep to score Prouse and give the Bruins back their lead. Next in the batting order was Conley Burk. On the 1-1 count, Burk hit a three run home run to bring the score up to 6-2 in favor of the home team.

Bottom of the third, with bases loaded and no outs, Bayne went down on strikes to see Brandt come to the plate. Got one more on to go up 7-2
Bruins go up 8-4  in the top of the fourth.

The Bruins got another on the board in the bottom of the third as J.C. Poe ran home off of the RBI by Zay Brandt.

A sac fly by Kirkpatrick in the fourth inning scored Evan Walker to put BJU ahead 8-2. The final run for the Bruins came in the bottom of the sixth as Conley Burk raced home on a wild pitch.

Jason Quillin came in at the top of the sixth to relieve Terribile. While several Tornados got on base and threatened to score, the Bruins left them stranded and sent them back to the dugout empty handed. But as the seventh inning rolled around, Brevard got within three as a they tallied four runs.

Bob Jones looked for insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Tornados got out of that inning as they went into the final inning.

Noah Weaver entered the game on the mound for Bob Jones and hoped for three quick outs to end the game. The Tornados had other plans and scored twice to get within one. Sam Gonzalez caught the final out of the night as the Bruins finished on top 9-8.

The Bruins closed out the contest with nine runs on six hits as Brevard finished with 12 hits and eight runs.

"The bats were going tonight," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "We were on and off, but we didn't stop, and that is what we needed. Defensively, it was a little shaky, but we got it accomplished and we're thankful we pulled out the win."

Up next, the Bruins are back at Conestee Park for a Friday night contest against Mid-Atlantic Christian University for Senior Night.

Looking to the weekend, Coach Casteel said, "we have nothing to lose. So let's go out and give it everything we got. MACU is going to play us hard. They played us tough at the beginning of the season, so we have to take that back and we have a great opportunity with this team."
