The Bob Jones University golf team opened their 2024 season with a win over Montreat College in a match-play exhibition from Silver Creek Golf Club in Morganton, North Carolina.
"This was a great start to the season with some new guys making significant contributions," said Head Coach Dennis Scott.
Before the start of today's exhibition, the Bruins shared a thank you gift to the Montreat College team which included the book, Golf's Sacred Journey, and G-O-L-F (God Offers Loving Forgiveness) tracts. Following a word of prayer, the competition between the two teams got underway.Â
Bryce Coursen got the Bruins off to a good start and was six-up through the first nine holes. He won his match early on the 12th hole with an 8 and 6 victory. Junior Brandon Autry continued to play strong and earned a full point for the Bruins with a convincing 6 and 5 win. Josiah Swaffer concluded his match at the 17th hole and added a full point to the Bruins total with close 2 and 1 match. After preparing well during the preseason, freshmen Brayden Joyner and Braden Benke came into the competition ready to play as they also both earned full points. After battling back-and-forth for 18 holes, Dakota Holt tied his match to come away with the final half point.
After all the scores had been tallied, it was the Bruins on top finishing 5.5 to 3.5 over Montreat College.
"All in all, our preseason preparations were extremely helpful in getting us ready," said Scott. "This match definitely showed the kind of depth this team has this year. It should be an exciting season!"
