The Bob Jones University volleyball team came away with two wins on Saturday in Cleveland, Georgia, closing out a strong day of competition with a 3-0 sweep of Milligan University followed by a gritty five-set victory over Truett McConnell University.
"We knew we were going to play two solid teams today," said Coach Christa Schlichting. "Our defense really stepped it up and made the difference. There were a lot of long rallies, and we stayed patient and trusted one another to make the big plays. It was two great team victories today. Praise the Lord!"
In the opener against Milligan University, the Bruins wasted no time finding their rhythm as they pulled out to an early lead. The team continued to hold on and finished set one 25-18 over the Buffs.Â
In set two, the Bruins and Buffs exchanged points throughout keeping the score close. With set point on the line and Milligan leading 25-24, the Bruins recorded three straight points to take the set 27-25.Â
As the final frame got underway, the Buffs were looking to stay alive and took an early six point advantage over Bob Jones. The Bruins then went on a 7-1 run to even the score 11-11. It remained close for the rest of the set, but the Bruins completed the sweep with a 25-22 set win over Milligan University.Â
After a short break, the Bruins were back on the court to face off against the home team, Truett McConnell University. The Bears got off to a hot start and soon pulled out to an eight point lead. Halfway through the set, BJU tallied six straight points to cut down the deficit. Truett McConnell pulled ahead once again and finished set one on top 25-15.Â
Similarly to set one, the Bruins found themselves trailing Truett McConnell. Late in the set, the Bruins looked to rally, but the Bears finished ahead 25-19 to lead the match 2-0.Â
Looking to stay in the contest, the Bruins battled throughout the third frame. Despite trailing most of the set, BJU worked point by point to get within a few points of the Bears. With the match on the line, the Bruins scored five straight points to take set three 25-23.
The Bruins carried their momentum to perform well in set four. They tied the match up 2-2 with a 25-21 set victory to force a deciding fifth set.Â
In the final set, the Bruins worked to a 10-7 lead. Truett McConnell came back to knot the score at 13-13. It remained tight and soon the Bears led 16-15. The Bruins came back to score three consecutive points to claim the set 18-16 and complete the 3-2 comeback win.
With today's wins, the Bruins improve to 12-14 on the season.Â
Up next, the Bruins will travel North Carolina next Friday for an afternoon tri-match.
