The Bob Jones University Bruins volleyball team wrapped up their regular season in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Warren Wilson College Owls 3-0 inside the Davis Field House.
It was a special start on Saturday as the Bruins recognized a program record of six graduating seniors. This year's graduating class marks the most seniors in program history.
As the game began, the Bruins pulled ahead to an early 8-1 lead before the Owls were able to begin to close the gap. The Bruin regained control and increased their advantage and finished out the opening frame 25-12.
The second set got off to a quick start with Bob Jones pulling to a 10-2 lead before the Owls called a timeout. The Bruins continued to set themselves ahead and finished the middle set with a commanding 25-6 win.
As the third set got underway, the Owls were able to take their first substantial lead of the game. Despite the slow start, the Bruins clawed their way back. A kill from Hannah Goodwin tied the game before some great serving by Lois Bido put the team back on top. The Bruins wrapped up the Senior Day sweep with a 25-19 set three victory.
Hannah Goodwin picked up her 1,000th career kill with her 10 kills on the night. She also tallied seven aces from the service line with Hayley Prater leading the team in that category with eight. Defensively, Anne Lloyd led all players with 13 digs.
Following the game, Coach Christa Schlichting said, "we have extra momentum as we celebrate our girls to make it special. I thought we played well. The third set had a bit of a slower start, but we showed that we are ready to lock in and get it done and get it done together."
She continued saying, "we had a great group of friends and family here to support our seniors today. I'm also proud of our freshman and sophomores that decorated the gym and set that up to be something special. This senior class has definitely made in an impact on our program, and I am thankful for the commitment they've had to our team."
With the win, the Bruins secure momentum heading into post-season play, extending their winning streak to six games and finishing the regular season above .500 with a 16-14 record.
Next week, the Bruins travel to Pensacola, Florida to compete at the NCCAA South Region Tournament.
