The Bob Jones University men's basketball team wrapped up their weekend in Sewanee, Tennessee in a battle against NCAA DIII program Spalding University Saturday afternoon where they fell 85-79 to the Golden Eagles.
In their first ever meeting against the Golden Eagles, the Bruins started out strong and soon pushed to an early 16-8 lead five minutes into the first half. They increased their advantage to 14 points after a dunk by Braxton Murray halfway through the opening frame. Spalding didn't back down and worked to cut down the deficit. After the opening 20 minutes of play, Bob Jones held on to a 38-34 lead.
Brandon Wilkins opened the second half with a basket from outside the arc. With 10 minutes remaining in the contest, the Golden Eagles knotted the score 54-54 before the Bruins went on a 6-2 run to regain a slight advantage. It remained a back-and-forth effort with each team evening the score throughout the final minutes. In the end, it was Spalding University on top 85-79.
Justin Skelton led the all players with 33 points while knocking down five threes and grabbing six rebounds. Brandon Wilkins followed with 18 points, four steals, and several key plays that kept BJU within striking distance. Shad Vander Hart added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
"It was a productive weekend for our guys," said Head Coach Tony Miller after the game. "These teams and this format replicate a regional and national Friday-Saturday. Today we made a couple more turnovers than we should have, missed a couple free throws than we should have, didn't hit 3-4 open threes that we should have, and had a couple bad rotations on defense. Those things add up and make the difference in a six point game."
Up next, the Bruins are home in the Davis Field House for their first regular season home game of the year as they host Brevard College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
