Bruins Split Day Two of NCCAA National Championship Pool Play

In day two of the NCCAA National Championship in Joplin, Missouri, the #4 Bob Jones University Bruins split the day, sweeping their opening game against Ozark Christian College before falling in four sets to #1 Manhattan Christian College.

The Bruins opened day two of pool play with a 10:30 a.m. match against #8 Ozark Christian College. The first frame was a set of runs. After Ozark Christian pulled to an early 8-3 lead, the Bruins put together a string of 11 straight points to take the 15-9 lead. The Ambassadors responded with an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to just one point. Bob Jones held on and kills by Bethany Estell and Hannah Goodwin gave them the opening set win 25-22.

It was a closer second set through the first few points. The Bruins worked to put together a lead and soon finished it off 25-16 to take the set two victory.

The Bruins and Ambassadors put together another close contest in the third. While it wasn't pretty, the Bruins slowly began pulling ahead to a slight advantage and were able to complete the sweep with a 25-18 set win.

After a brief break, the Bruins were back on the court at 2:30 p.m. to face off against the top-seeded Manhattan Christian College Thunder. The Bruins opened the contest strong, trading points early before the Thunder rolled to a 15-6 lead. The Bruins didn't back down and battled their way back to tie the game 22-22 before taking the lead. Manhattan Christian fought their way back again and won 27-25 in a tightly contested first set that featured six ties and two lead changes.

Manhattan Christian used momentum from the opening set and pushed forward to lead the contest 2-0 after a 25-14 set win.

The Bruins came out with energy in the third set and took an early advantage moving to 17-9 over Manhattan Christian. The Thunder looked to mount a comeback, but the Bruins held strong and won the third set in a thrilling 27-25 set win.

Bob Jones battled to keep it close in the fourth frame, but the Thunder soon pulled ahead. Despite a late rally, the Bruins were unable to complete the comeback and fell in the final set 25-19.

Following today's contests, Coach Christa Schlichting commented, "we struggled in the first match of the morning, but we were able to pull out the win. In the second match, we came out with a lot more focus and energy against Manhattan, and we really battled hard. Going into the semifinals we just have to focus on making every point count. We know what we need to do and we're looking forward to competing."

The Bruins finished pool play as the runner up in their section to advance to Friday night's semifinal. They will play the #3 Pensacola Christian College at 7 p.m. in Joplin, Missouri for a chance to play in the title game.
