Golf Team Shows Resiliency at Golden Tiger Collegiate Invite

The Bob Jones University Bruins golf team concluded their time in Gainesville, Georgia with a seventh place finish at the Golden Tiger Collegiate Invite.

As the competition got underway on Monday, the Bruins were on the course in cold and wet playing conditions. After battling through the rain for the majority of the opening round, play was suspended for the day.

"Since we were the first off the tee in round one, we took the brunt of the bad weather before play was suspended," said Head Coach Dennis Scott. "Our guys embraced it but scoring was extremely difficult. The course was nearly unplayable for the majority of the round. By the time they suspended play, we had completed 15 or 16 holes while some of the other teams had only played half that many holes."

It was all sunshine on Tuesday as the Bruins made their way back to the Chattahoochee Golf Club. The team wrapped up their remaining holes from round one before starting the round two competition. At the end of the opening 18 holes, the Bruins scores were as follows: Brandon Autry - 79,  Eli DeVaughn - 82, Grant Camfield - 87, Bryce Coursen - 88, and Brayden Joyner - 95 for a team score of 336.

DeVaughn recorded the first birdie of round two for the Bruins, and only the second of the competition for BJU, to go up two just six holes in. Three holes later, he birdied again to stay +2 at the turn.

Camfield saw his first birdie of the day on his tenth hole of the day at the par-four first hole. The team continued to play well with Camfield, Coursen and Autry each adding birdies to improve throughout the round.

Autry wrapped up round two with three straight birdies to close out his competition with a score of 76. The rest of the team saw improvement from the opening round with Camfield finishing the day with a score of 79, DeVaughn and Coursen with 82. Joyner with 83 for a team total of 319.

"We bounced back in round two, but it was too much ground to make up," said Scott. "The mental toughness and resilience we showed was tremendous! I was proud of our ability to deal with the adverse weather and remain focused. I believe we could have finished in the top three teams if we wouldn't have had the struggles on Monday. Brandon had an amazing finish to round two (four birdies on the second nine) to make another Top 10 individual finish. We are making solid progress to get where we want to be. The hard work is paying off."

The team is back in the Upstate at Cherokee Golf Course to compete at the Trailblazer Spring Invitational on March 24-25 hosted by North Greenville University.
