Bruins Split with Eagles to Secure Series Win

In today's doubleheader, the Bruins split with the Alice Lloyd College Eagles to take this weekend's road series.

"Our team saw how good we can be," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "The Lord has given this group of guys the ability to play fundamentally sound baseball."

Game 1: 10-6 Eagles

In the first game of the day, the Bruins got out to a hot start on offense scoring three runs in the first inning! Cayden Kennedy started it with an RBI single that scored Elijah Medrano. Then the Bruins base runners capitalized on a bad pick off move for their second run. Mac Carroll then added to the total with an RBI single that made it 3-0.

The Eagles got a couple runs back in the second inning, but it was the third inning where the Eagles offense exploded for seven runs making the score 9-3 very quickly. The Bruins continued to fight and make the game close in the fifth inning, though. They were able to score three runs all with two outs against them. Mac Carroll added more RBI to his day with a two-RBI triple! Max Lucien then reached on an error in the field which scored Carroll from third. The score was narrowed to 9-6.

Mac Carroll started on the mound for the Bruins, but after a long third inning, Kurtis Wess came in to be relief. Even with a couple struggles in the sixth inning, Wess stayed controlled and didn't let the pressure get to him. In his time in the game, he only allowed one run and kept the game close. The Bruins, however, couldn't find any more runs, so the first game of the doubleheader resulted in a 10-6 Bruins loss.

Game 2: 9-3 Bruins

In game two, the Bruins came out focused to get a win and take the series, and that's exactly what they did! Tillman Padgett started this game for the Bruins on the mound and went the whole way for another impressive outing! He gave up a run in the first inning, but that didn't phase him at all. In the second inning, the Bruins offense came alive scoring six runs!

The Bruins did a great job of taking advantage of the Eagle's defensive mistakes while also staying smart and patient themselves. Both Cayden Kennedy and Cody Kirkpatrick started the inning reaching on errors and hustling to first base. Max Lucien followed with a sacrifice bunt to move over both runners. Bryson French started the scoring with an RBI single tying it at 1-1. Zay Brandt was next laying down a perfect bunt that would score a run and also let him reach first base safely. Kyle Prouse continues to impress from the plate and hit an RBI single before Mac Carroll comes up huge again hitting a two-RBI triple! Finally to end the scoring in the inning, Conley Burk reached on an error which scored Carroll from third. The score was 6-1 after the huge inning!

After jumping out ahead, it seemed to give the Bruins a huge sense of calm confidence the rest of the game that could also carry into the rest of the season. The Eagles gained a run back in the third inning. But in the fourth inning, the Bruins scored again on an RBI single from Mac Carroll. Who else? Bryson French added another run with an RBI single for the Bruins in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-2.

Padgett was electric today and proved his strength in the sixth inning. After giving up a leadoff home run followed by a single, Padgett retired three straight batters to end any sort of threat of more runs for the Eagles. In fact, in the fourth, fifth, and seventh inning, Padgett and the Bruins defense shut down the Eagles offense forcing them to go down in order!

The Bruins added a run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch and won 9-3!

"Hopefully this gives us some momentum going into Montreat on Tuesday," said Coach Morrison. "We also have a big series this upcoming weekend against Toccoa."

This game was huge for the Bruins. Everybody showed up, and now they get to come back home after a series win to play Montreat College on Tuesday, March 18. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Conestee Park!
