Mack Ritter had a historic night on the mound for the Bruins striking out 14 batters in a 8-5 win over south region rival Toccoa Falls College.
"Tonight the guys were fired up to be able to play Toccoa Falls," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "Our pitch selection was great and the Lord was gracious to give us the win."
Ritter started the night striking out three batters in the first inning. Along with Ritter, the Bruins offense got off to a hot start as well. A few singles in a row loaded the bases to start the game. Bryson French hit into a double-play, but it scored a run. This was followed by Evan Johnson hitting an RBI single to make 2-0 in the first inning.
The Bruins added a few more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Ritter continued to deal. Conley Burk hit an RBI double before scoring himself on a couple wild pitches in a row. Later in the inning, the Bruins loaded the bases again and Angelo Gomez drew a walk which scored another run. The score stood at 5-0.Â
The Bruins went into the sixth inning with Ritter still pitching great. The offense added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-0. All these runs came with two outs. After Kyle Prouse doubled, Evan Johnson hit an RBI double that scored Prouse. This was followed by a double by Mac Carroll scoring both Johnson and French. This lead felt comfortable, but the Screaming Eagles were able to fight back a little bit.Â
Toccoa Falls was able to score four runs in the seventh inning which cut the Bruins lead in half. They then added one more in the eighth inning. As the intensity grew, Conley Burk was put on the mound to close it out for the Bruins. This was Burk's first appearance on the mound all season long.
In the top of the ninth inning, Burk struck out three batters in a row to get the 8-5 win for the Bruins!
The star of the night was obviously Mack Ritter as he set a program record with 14 strikeouts! "Mack was incredible," said Coach Morrison. "He got ahead in the count early and often."
On the offensive side, Kyle Prouse, Conley Burk, and Evan Johnson all ended the night with three hits. The mixture of great offense and great pitching kept the Bruins energy very high throughout the game.Â
The Bruins will look to carry that energy into the doubleheader against the Screaming Eagles tomorrow all starting at 12:00 p.m. at Conestee Park!Â
